Lahore: Keeping in view the integral part science plays in our present day society, a ‘Science Fest’ was held on May 4, 2016 to encourage Middle School to take a special interest in the sciences. The Science Fest consisted of a host of competitions. Each class from Middle School was divided into five groups to represent their class in each of the five activities to maximise student participation. The students were given one week to prepare their projects.

The first project was the ‘Tower Building Competition.’ The sections competed against each other to build the highest tower made of straws in the allotted time. Each group was allowed 50 straws. The next activity was the ‘Science Tech Competition’ which integrated ICT Skills into the students’ science projects. A teacher filmed the students performing their science experiments and these videos were viewed in the IT Lab.

The Project Board Competition tested students’ scientific research. Students had to inquire into how a specific thing works and the topics were assigned by the teachers. The students then presented their Project Board, making use of their verbal skills. The Working Model Competition taught the students to put engineering to use by making various games and utilising different scientific phenomena e.g. magnetism.

The projects were judged on a set criteria by our Science Department and the winners were rewarded with certificates. This event emphasised the fundamental role of science in our lives and encouraged students to take interest in scientific research.
