BISC 2017 News Story

Selangor: Beaconhouse celebrated the true spirit of sportsmanship as international student athletes from the school group converged in Malaysia at the 2nd Beaconhouse International School Convention (BISC) 2017, held from January 18 to 20, 2017. The convention was officiated amidst much cheer from over 1,400 attendees by a representative of Yang Berhormat Datuk Saravanan A/L Murugan of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Mr P Subramaniam, AMN, PJK, at the Panasonic Stadium Selangor. Beaconhouse Group Chairperson Mrs Nasreen M Kasuri, Chief Executive Mr Kasim Kasuri and Beaconhouse Regional Director Mr Jahanzeb Shah were also present at the opening ceremony.

BISC was initiated in Bangkok last year to highlight the importance of sports in academic learning. Riding on the huge success of the inaugural convention, this year, the convention was held in Malaysia. A huge crowd of students, teachers and parents showed their support to over 200 delegates from Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand competing in badminton, basketball, athletics, futsal and swimming. The chance to compete was open to both male and female students, from 12 to 16 years of age. The convention continued at Beaconhouse Sri Inai International School the next day with panel discussions, quizzes, a science exhibition, an art installation and photography.

The Malaysian sports team, consisting of 50 delegates, was chosen through an inter-school carnival in Malaysia, held between Beaconhouse Sri Inai, Beaconhouse Sri Murni, Beaconhouse Sri Lethia, and Newlands International School. For many, it was the first time playing in an international tournament against other countries.

Beaconhouse CEO Mr Kasim Kasuri said the school places emphasis on an all-rounded education and not just classroom excellence. The strong network within the school group also allows for a stronger global approach and exposes the students to activities and experiences that may be challenging for other schools.

“This is a unique experience that not many students get to have – a rare chance to meet and compete with other students in the region while still keeping it friendly. We are able to offer this to our students as we have a vast network of schools that spans from Europe to Asia. This ability to use our network to offer experiences to our students is what sets us apart from the rest,” Mr Kasim Kasuri said.

Representative of Yang Berhormat Datuk Saravanan A/L Murugan of Ministry of Youth and Sports Mr P Subramaniam emphasised on the importance of sports and education in order to build a progressive and sustainable nation.

Beaconhouse Regional Director Malaysia Mr Syed Jahanzeb Shah said the power of sports in building character should not be underestimated. This is part of the Beaconhouse ethos of building Lifelong Learners and Future Leaders.

Through BISC 2017, Beaconhouse hopes to be at the forefront in contributing to future world leaders who excel both academically as well as in real life.
