Lahore: The Access Centre at the Beaconhouse ALJT Campus took an initiative to take a group of seven students to visit USA for an International Summer Programme, from July 1 to 21, 2017. The group consisted of Zirva Hayat, Subtain Ali Akhtar, Muhammad Mahad Khan, Muhammad Shahmeer, Irteza Butt, Ahmed Sohail, Muhammad Ali and their chaperone Mr Nauman Wazir, career advisor at Beaconhouse ALJT.

The three week long programme, titled “Learning Streams International”, was organised by Hiram College in Ohio. The students stayed at Long Island University, New York during the first week and learned about green roofs and sustainable water sanitation in an urban setting. They proceeded to their host campus, Hiram College in Kent, Ohio, for their second week, where they learned about the lifestyle and culture of American people living in a rural setting. They also learned about different techniques used to measure water quality and the importance of the environmental and climatic changes around us. The students also enjoyed fun activities like canoeing in a stream and had a chance to represent Pakistani culture to the American and Dominican communities at a cultural evening organised by the hosts.

The group was divided into two, each consisting of four members and both groups had the opportunity to learn computer programming during the third week. However, both groups visited different venues, with one visiting Kent State University, while the other group took a trip to Kelly’s Island in Lake Erie.

The group was awarded the “Best community from Pakistan”. It was indeed an enriching three week experience for the students, one they are not going to forget any time soon.
